Produced a three-day, limited-run experiential event, "The Weird Flea Market," built around the theme of niche obsession. In an algorithm-driven society where the joy of encountering the unexpected has faded, the event set out to bring that discovery back.
"Weird" was reframed not as mere eccentricity, but as a form of love born from someone's obsessive devotion. The venue spotlighted items with little value in the mainstream market yet actively traded within Mercari's niche communities, organized into three zones: a "Weird Museum," "Someone's Collection," and a "Weird Shop."
On display were over 200 obsession-driven items collected over years by passionate collectors — from proudly unfashionable "ugly sweaters" to kokeshi dolls each with a distinct face — each paired with the story of why it came to be loved. Experiential content included a "Kokeshi General Election" to vote for a favorite doll, a "Confession Wall" where visitors posted their own obsessions on sticky notes, and a "Gal Deployment" installation featuring real gyaru culture, language, and mannerisms to deepen the immersive experience.
The "Weird Shop" zone let visitors purchase items directly from collectors, with vendors specializing in cacti, bonsai, and rubber ducks adding further energy to the venue. A limited-capacity interactive flea market hosted by high-school artist MON7A took a different approach from typical flea markets — buyers heard the story behind each piece before deciding to purchase. An in-app auction for MON7A's T-shirt drew 32 bidders, visualizing that same intensity of niche passion online.
Over three days, the event drew roughly 7,000 visitors across a wide range of generations, with lines forming at peak times. Both on-site and on social media, visitors voiced surprise and nostalgia at a niche world rarely surfaced by everyday search and recommendation algorithms.
